In 1959, Allan Hall, a founder of the Orange County Art Association and alumnus of Chouinard Institute of Art and USC Fine Arts, was commissioned to paint the mural in the then-new Yorba Linda Public Library.
Events depicted include the Gaspar de Portolà Expedition, the first recorded European exploration of the interior of present-day California, including José Antonio Yorba, a member of the expedition. Yorba received a land grant comprising much of today’s Orange County from the Spanish Crown in recognition for his contributions. His son, Bernardo Yorba (after whom Yorba Linda is named) is also included in the mural, as is Father Junípero Serra, the founder of nine of California’s missions. The White House appears as an acknowledgment to then-Vice President Richard Nixon, who was born in Yorba Linda. Children of indigenous people, Mexican, and modern-day US heritage stand before a sapling tree with a single leaf denoting potential for growth.
