We interrupt this series of blog-posts to give you a short update on what’s happening in Atadena, after the devastating fires of last year…
The Altadena Bob Lucas Memorial Library is updating its historic 1999 community mural with a new, renewed version led by artist Edgar Arceneaux and local poets in early 2026.
The project, featuring themes of resilience and community, includes a new section painted with community input to reflect Altadena's spirit.
Key Details About the Mural Project:
• Location: The mural is located at the Bob Lucas Memorial Library and Literacy Center.
• Purpose: The project represents a "renewed, uplifting version" of the original 1999 mural, emphasizing community resilience, growth, and literacy.
• Process: The design was developed through community workshops in late 2025 where poetry and ideas were translated into visual imagery.
• Artists & Collaboration: Local artist Edgar Arceneaux and poets Sakae Manning/Carla Sameth facilitated the process, with painting sessions held in January 2026.
• Community Involvement: Residents of all ages were invited to help paint, making it a collaborative, historic, and, community-focused effort.
• Completion: The murals were nearing completion as of late January 2026, including work in the reading court and, facing the parking lot.
The project is considered a 25-year continuation of the original, serving as a lasting piece of art for the, Altadena community.

"Our murals at the Bob Lucas Library are almost finished. Local artists & designers will help us letter the text in the coming weeks and they should be complete by the end of February. We can’t wait to share the final work, a true community project.
And thank you to everyone (especially @edgar_three) who helped imagine and create the mural facing our parking lot and the new one inside our reading court… that was inspired by the previous mural at Bob Lucas Library."
